Analysis of spurious events in seismic interferometry
نویسنده
چکیده
Seismic interferometry can be used to construct the Green’s function between two buried receivers in the subsurface. To construct the exact Green function sources should be placed at a surface enclosing the buried receivers. In practice sources could only be placed at the surface, and spurious events are introduced in the constructed Green’s function. The origin of these spurious events are analysed and methods to reduce the amplitude of these events are investigated.

Marchenko imaging
Traditionally, the Marchenko equation forms a basis for 1D inverse scattering problems. A 3D extension of the Marchenko equation enables the retrieval of the Green’s response to a virtual source in the subsurface from reflection measurements at the earth’s surface. This constitutes an important step beyond seismic interferometry. Whereas seismic interferometry requires a receiver at the positio...
متن کاملHead waves in ocean acoustic ambient noise: Measurements and modeling.
Seismic interferometry recovers the Green's function between two receivers by cross-correlating the field measured from sources that surround the receivers. In the seismic literature, it has been widely reported that this processing can produce artifacts in the Green's function estimate called "spurious multiples" or the "virtual refracted wave." The spurious multiples are attributed to the hea...

Seismic interferometry is a new field in seismology that is finding many useful applications in exploration geophysics (Rickett and Claerbout, 1999; Schuster, 2001; Yu and Schuster, 2006; Wapenaar et al., 2002; Wapenaar, 2004; Wapenaar et al., 2005; Calvert et al., 2004 and others) Analogous to optical interferometry, seismic interferometry estimates the detailed properties of an elastic medium...
متن کاملEvent-driven Seismic Interferometry with Ambient Seismic Noise
SUMMARY By cross-correlating recordings of ambient seismic noise, one can retrieve the subsurface reflection response. The quality of the retrieved reflections would depend on the qualities of the ambient noise. In a previous study, we cross-correlated ambient-noise data recorded in a desert area in North Africa and showed that we retrieved reflections. This was done assuming that body-wave noi...
متن کاملComparison of microearthquake locations using seismic interferometry principles
Mapping, localization, and general characterization of problems in reservoir fracture systems is one of the most important in oil, gas, and geothermal energy production. One way to study and monitor these fracture systems is to analyze the microearthquakes triggered during hydraulic fracturing or stimulation, as these events generally occur along newly created and preexisting fractures. Thus, t...
